How much attention do you pay to your tongue? I’m guessing not very much…
What if I told you that according to Ayurveda (an ancient, yet extremely relevant, Indian system of health) all toxins begin in the mouth.
Basically, your tongue is a breeding ground for bacteria and when it accumulates, the toxicity spreads down your digestive tract to the rest of your body. This can result in weakened digestive health, less nutrient absorption and lowered immunity. The toxicity is a white, mucous coating you can see on your tongue.
Gross, I know.
The amazing news is that you can easily remove these toxins and bacteria by scraping your tongue each morning. This is something I have done daily for a few years and am happy to share all the details with you so you can add it in to your day.
As with everything Picky Diet this is simple, quick and easy to incorporate into your life.
It is literally what it sounds like. Gently scraping your tongue with a tool to remove the buildup of bacteria and toxins.
All you need is a tongue scraper. It is a U-shaped tool you can get at your local health food store or online. I personally use a stainless steel one that I got on Amazon. They are around $10 - $15.
Ideally you should scrape your tongue each morning before you brush your teeth.
Hold your scraper with one hand on each end, look in the mirror and gently scrape the surface of your tongue from back to front in a long stroke. Be careful not to gag yourself – you don’t need to go that far back and make sure to be gentle.
You will see the accumulation of white mucus on the scraper and you can rinse it off. Repeat this ten times. Clean off your scraper and store it in a clean spot.
