What are Hemp Seeds?

Hemp Seeds (often called Hemp Hearts) are one of the healthiest seeds on earth. They contain high levels of protein, heathy fat and magnesium - all of which are essential for great health. This superfood has been shown to improve digestion, balance hormones and improve metabolism! Yes, they do come from the same plant species as Cannabis, however eating hemp seeds does not cause any type of psychotropic reaction.

What are the health benefits of Hemp Seeds?

Plant Based Protein

Hemp seeds are an amazing source of complete plant based protein since they contain all of the essential amino acids (essential amino acids are not produced in the body and therefore need to come from your diet). Hemp seeds are easily digested and contain more protein than chia or flax seeds providing your body with healthy energy and strength!

Healthy Hormones

One of the causes of PMS is a hormonal imbalance which leads to a lack of gamma linolenic acid (GLA) in the body. Hemp seeds contain a good amount of GLA and essential fatty acids, which studies have shown help alleviate PMS symptoms by balancing hormone levels.

Hemp seeds are high in insoluble and soluble fiber, helping to keep you feeling full and your digestive system healthy. This healthy mixture of fibre feeds the probiotics in your gut keeping your immune system strong.

How much should you eat?

Hemp seeds are easy to eat as they have virtually no flavour and therefore can be added to smoothies, salads, oatmeal or cereal, power bowls, baked goods or even hummus or almond butter to up the protein intake. 1 to 3 tablespoons per day is all you need. 

How to get more Hemp Seeds in your diet...

Buying and Storing Hemp Seeds...

You can buy hemp seeds in a package at most grocery stores and definitely at any health food store. A popular brand is Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts but these days there a many different options. It is best to store them in an airtight container (most packages they come in are airtight bags) in the fridge as they can go stale.
